M and I are history geeks... especially military history... Not too long ago, we headed over to Mobile, Alabama and spent the day wandering around an old ship and submarine exhibit.Ahem, that's a battleship, or to get even more technical, a South Dakota Class Battleship christened the USS ALABAMA. If you're a history buff, you can read all about it here.
By the way, in case you're wondering, Mobile is pronounced Mo-BEEL, not MO-bill... Just sayin'.
Of course, I had to take a look at the kitchen, the mess halls (at least 3 of them!) and the bakery. I don't remember how many thousands of loaves of bread they baked a day, but it was astronomical.
Check out the size of this bread machine. I could literally fit my entire body in there. Not that I'd want to... but that's some serious bread making action.
Anyway, I was impressed by the compact storage and I kind of have a thing for divided dinner trays. I didn't know they were made in stainless steel, which I love.
So much so that I googled it to see if you can still buy them now a days. Come to find out, you can still buy stainless steel divided trays... check it out!
I may need to get a few for camping trips...

Thanks, dear. Surprisingly, the wheel was really small. I was imagining that it would be this huge wheel with spindles, like you see in Pirate movies or something, but it turned out to be pretty simple.

All in all, it was an inexpensive date day out. $4 for parking (cash only, please) and a couple of dollars for the museum entrance fee. We packed a picnic lunch and had a great day. Amazing how much interesting history is just around the corner (or up the interstate a ways, but you get the idea). Anchors aweigh! Any other history geeks out there?

ReplyDeleteWhat fun! I especially loved the kitchen -- wish you would've stood beside the breadmaker -- I couldn't quite get the perspective and will just take your word that you could fit inside it! I am now wanting a divided tray (never thought about it before today!) Ha!
I should have! I didn't even think of it at the time. I LOVE love love divided trays... I can be OCD about eating one food at a time... :)

K would definitely enjoy something like that, unfortunately, I'm not such a huge fan. Still, the next time you come by, we should visit Corpus. Y'all would all love visiting the Lexington, and I would love to visit the state aquarium again. Miss you!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I never told you about my divided tray fetish! I all started back in kindergarten, my grandmother had these little plastic divided trays that we used to put our fluffernutter sandwiches on (cut into 4 squares, of course) while watching TV in their living room... good times... And junior camp just added to it - camp food is so much better when served directly on a tray, LOL.

Never had a desire to visit the battleship, they are cool but creep me out some. Maybe I will get myself over there one of these weekends...and I think the divided trays would be a great addition to our camping trips:)
